MEDIOCHRE ART

I recently joined the Kittery Art Assocation. They host a weekly event through the summer, where local properties open to members to paint “en plein air”. This was actually only my second time painting on site and it’s really hard. I’m not happy with this at all but I learned that I needed to be more organized and thoughtful with my strokes. It takes a lot of focus and this wasn’t my day but it was a beautiful place to be.

Class Work – Radiating lines and a keyhole composition. The photo was so nice I found it hard to inerpret and painted it too dark without focusing enough on the sunset. Reflections are difficult!

Highland farm is a popular spot for us. I love the yellow straw grasses, water pools, walkways and open skies. This is late winter/early springtime. I don’t think I did it justice. I was trying out a new limited palette combination and I was struggling. Prussian blue is not my thing. I’ll get back there this fall, to try again.

Class Work- Mountain and flowing river scene. Started by sketching the best design of elements, moving into a toned background and mass sketch on an 8×8 canvas in oils. Took about 4 hours. I’m used to working on much smaller canvas paper; about 4×6 & 5×7 so this was a challenge. I’m pretty happy with the small victories in this study.

Class Work- Making order of this mass of trees is really hard for me. My trees just kept getting fatter and fatter but I learned a lot about what not to do for next time.
